Summer is Here!

Smiling girl with flowerSummer has arrived and children often find themselves with more free time! At the start of summer vacation many children are thrilled with their newfound freedom. However, at some point children will say the dreaded phrase “I’m bored” and often, the parental response is “Okay, go play!” Play is a very important activity for children; it is much more than just having fun. When your child plays, they often call upon skills that are important for their development like creative thinking, problem solving, interacting with peers, and emotional understanding. Play is a great way for children to pass the time, and it’s also important for their development.

When we’re not off playing with the children that are part of our own lives this summer, we, at the Schubert Center for Child Studies, are very excited to begin a conversation with you about children and play. We have brought together a group of experts from Case Western Reserve University in diverse fields of knowledge including psychology, anthropology, communication sciences, medicine, social work, and music education – all with expertise in child development and play. We look forward to introducing them to you over this summer (and beyond) and hearing your thoughts as they share information from their research and suggestions from their experience and practice.

Expressing Emotions in Play

By: Sandra Russ

Clockwise move

Loaded Weapon 1 movie Pretend play is a way for your child to experience and talk about a variety of feelings in a safe and fun environment. Through pretend play, your child can practice expressing how they’re feeling. It also allows them to think about and try to express how others are feeling. For example, when playing a game where the child is the “hero” they may express joy in saving the day, while the child playing the “bad guy” may express anger or defeat.

Play offers a way for children to learn adaptive skills, including understanding social cues from playmates (what does happy, sad, or scared look like), negotiating what is “fair” (taking turns as the good guy/bad guy), and expressing their feelings to peers and caregivers in a thoughtful way. Play also allows children to label their feelings and pretend what others may be feeling while playing. Not only does play give children an opportunity to explore and practice expressing different emotions, in my work, I have found that children’s ability to express emotions is linked to their creativity.

There are many ways to encourage a child to express emotions in their play. Here are some suggestions to use with your child. Let us know what you think!

  • Narrate and comment on your child’s play and label emotions that are appropriate. For example, “He looks really happy now that he’s won the race!”
  • If your child is younger, they may benefit from you demonstrating what some emotions look like while playing. For example, using a higher pitch voice and perhaps jumping up and down to show “happy.”

Stealing Beauty release Ask questions like “I wonder how they feel?”

  • Give your child a prompt, such as suggesting you make up a caring story about a boy/girl that takes a doggy for a walk or a sad story about a boy/girl that lost their favorite toy.

Repeating Stories in Pretend Play

By: Sandra Russ

Have you ever noticed your child repeating the same playtime activities over and over again?

A Soldier’s Story hd

Children use play as a tool to explore their environment and learn how things in their world work. They often do this by repeating the same stories in play. For example, when given a choice your child may want to play “house” every day. Often, children want to play the same roles or act out the story each time. While, playing “house” everyday may seem boring to you as an adult, this repetition is important for your child’s development. This is a way for your child to recreate and better understand their experiences and different social roles (i.e. what a “mommy,” “daddy,” and/or “child” does and thinks).

Moreover, as the parent, you can take an active role in helping your child practice playing different roles. This will help your child practice thinking from different points of view. Your child’s ability to see and understand another’s perspective is valuable and will encourage them to begin to think of multiple points of view and promote empathy. As well, it will allow them to practice and explore negotiating tactics that are fundamental in helping your child get along with siblings and peers. Try to switch things up this week and offer to play different characters. Even if you are told to play the “sister,” role you could potentially be a sister from a story your child has read or perhaps one that is happy-go-lucky and then another that is sad and wants help cheering up.

Strengthening Creative Play Skills

By: Sandra Russ

There are a number of ways to encourage your child’s creativity. As your child plays, you could ask questions that help your child elaborate their stories. Asking questions like “What happens next?” and “How are they feeling?” helps guide your child to develop a cohesive story. In addition, it engages them in the story so that they may think about ideas they may not have come up with otherwise, and encourages them to persevere and continue playing with an idea.

Caretakers should try not to not pressure the child to develop a story, but rather, it is important to observe and offer guidance when the child seems “stuck,” and to praise your child often for expressing emotions and using their imagination. Paying attention to your child’s playtime activities tells them that play is important. It also allows them to express themselves and communicate in a way that is most accessible to them. It is helpful to set aside time for your child to play freely without outside distractions and to offer times in the day when your child can play spontaneously.

To help your child think creatively, you might try asking questions like:

· What would it be like to have an amusement park all to yourself?

Walled In

· What would it be like to go to a zoo on the moon?

Venom release

· What would you do if you had a pet dinosaur?

· How many different ways can we use this block?

Or make up a story together. You could offer suggestions like making up a story about a boy or girl who has special powers.

Also, remember that it’s important to give your child time to play out their ideas and think creatively on their own without adult involvement.

What Happens When Children Play

By: Sandra Russ

Pretend play is a way for your child to learn about the world around them. When children play, they are able to think creatively, imagine new ideas, and gain insight into their world. Play allows children to learn how things work and start to see things in new ways. You may remember when you were a child playing “store,” “house,” or “school.” These are important activities that allow children to practice playing with ideas about the situations and the people they encounter day to day.

Pretend play gives your child an opportunity to practice expressing how they feel and what they think about their day to day interactions with people. When playing, children are learning adaptive skills, including understanding social cues from playmates, negotiating “fairness,” and expressing their feelings to peers and caregivers in a thoughtful way.

Play also gives children the chance to think creatively. For example, a child may use a yellow block to creatively represent the sun. This creative thinking allows children to strengthen their problem solving abilities (by thinking of ways to represent a sun when they do not have a sun to use). Play is a fun, healthy way for children to explore their world while also developing important skills they’ll need in learning how to interact with peers and handle problems creative

When we watch children play, we can see how much fun they are having. Play seems like a good way for children to pass the time. But children are doing more than just having fun. Through my research and practice, I’ve learned that pretend play helps children in so many ways. When children pretend in play, they are making-up stories. They are using toys to be many different things (a block can be a telephone). They create stories that have action and problems. As Jerome Singer (an expert in play from Yale University) points out, they are really practicing with thinking creatively. And this practice, in the safe and fun vehicle of pretend play, helps them develop important creative abilities.

Pretend play helps children to think of many different ideas instead of just a few. Children also express all kinds of emotions in play (happy, sad, angry, afraid). Play helps children learn to process, manage, and regulate their emotions. Children rehearse different ways of handling problems in play and learn ways to better cope with life’s stressors. And play helps children understand other people’s point of view. It is often said that play is children’s work. But this work involves having a good time. Adults can learn from them.

What Does Creative Play Look Like

By: Sandra Russ

Child playing with blocksPretend play is one arena where children can develop creative thinking abilities. Pretending encourages children to think, understand, and reason with many thoughts at one time. For example, when a child is pretending that a block is a car, they recall many ideas about what a car is or does. They may make noises like a car, perhaps use other blocks to make out the shape of a car, or maybe they imagine someone is driving the car. Pretend play allows children to practice symbolic thinking. When playing, children are given an opportunity to recall details that represent an object (i.e. a plane has wings) and apply them to other new ideas (i.e. adding “wings” to a car so that it can fly). Symbolic thinking is one aspect of pretend play that helps children form new ideas and facilitate creativity.
