What Happens When Children Play

By: Sandra Russ

Pretend play is a way for your child to learn about the world around them. When children play, they are able to think creatively, imagine new ideas, and gain insight into their world. Play allows children to learn how things work and start to see things in new ways. You may remember when you were a child playing “store,” “house,” or “school.” These are important activities that allow children to practice playing with ideas about the situations and the people they encounter day to day.

Pretend play gives your child an opportunity to practice expressing how they feel and what they think about their day to day interactions with people. When playing, children are learning adaptive skills, including understanding social cues from playmates, negotiating “fairness,” and expressing their feelings to peers and caregivers in a thoughtful way.

Play also gives children the chance to think creatively. For example, a child may use a yellow block to creatively represent the sun. This creative thinking allows children to strengthen their problem solving abilities (by thinking of ways to represent a sun when they do not have a sun to use). Play is a fun, healthy way for children to explore their world while also developing important skills they’ll need in learning how to interact with peers and handle problems creative
