The power of playing boardgames

By: Creative Play Muse

Boardgames don’t have to be battlefields (as the title of this article suggests):

What is it about these games that makes us behave so differently, that can provoke and push us within minutes of taking part? Jill Bellinson, a psychotherapist and the author of Children’s Use of Boardgames in Psychotherapy, believes that it is the structure of boardgames; they offer a safe haven where we feel comfortable expressing the less palatable aspects of our personalities - anger, aggression, competitiveness.

“It’s not a time to be collaborative, even if you are playing in teams. Boardgames can stir up competitive feelings but they’re also a secure space for those emotions,” Bellinson says. Which is why they’re such an invaluable tool in her therapy. She has spent hundreds of hours playing boardgames with children, gaining valuable psychological insights. “They are a window into what children are experiencing; their feelings about control, rules, structure, success, power can all play out in a boardgame…”

Good suggestions at the end of the article for what games to play and why. What boardgames did you play growing up? What games do your kids enjoy?

Tired of reading the same bedtime book?

By: Kelly Christian

Children love repetition and often they want to read the same books over and over again. If children want to read the same book night after night, let them! Dr. Kessler stresses that parents or caregivers should not feel pressured to move kids quickly on to something new. Reading the same books each night may be interesting to them and also may be comforting for them. When children re-read familiar books, they may feel good about being able to more easily follow along and anticipate how the story will go. Parents can encourage children to read a variety of books, however, it’s important not to push them too quickly. Be patient, kids will move on to new books when they are ready.

When reading, stop to look at the pictures

By: Kelly Christian

When reading to infants and toddlers do you find yourself describing the pictures your child points to? If so, that’s great! Dr. Kessler, emphasized when reading to young children, it is important to spend time looking carefully at the pictures and describing what you see. This helps infants and young children to connect the pictures with the words they hear and helps them piece together the story. Additionally, this action helps children pay attention to details that are not only contained in what you’re saying, but what they are looking at.

Case Western Reserve University, Children’s Museum of Cleveland partner to make parent better players

By: Creative Play Muse

Researches from CWRU who contribute valuable research to both this blog and the body of knowledge on creative play and child development are working on:

Preschool visitors between the ages of 4 and 6 to the Children’s Museum of Cleveland (CMC) will be invited to participate in a new study from the department of psychology at Case Western Reserve University to boost creativity and imagination in free play.

Nearby moms and caretakers will also engage in the study by watching how the children play and learn how to develop those play skills at home during several planned play sessions a week with mom, dad or the caretaker, according to Sandra Russ, professor of psychology at Case Western Reserve University and the study’s principal investigator.

Russ, along with graduate students Kelly Christian and Karla Fehr and undergraduate Kathryn Clusman, will study approximately 40 children to see if a play intervention, first piloted at the CMC last year, continues to support the hypothesis that play interventions helps children learn how to be better players and use more creativity and imagination in their daily lives…

which focused on “The Importance of Play, Imagination and Creative Thinking.” Recess was the hot topic discussed at the conference and how this crucial part of the school day has been greatly reduced and sometimes eliminated all together in exchange for more instructional time in the classroom. Research so far has found associations between the amount of time spent in an unstructured free play environment and learning abilities as well as social, emotional, and physical development. More research is needed to better understand the amount of time children have for recess and the impact this time has on their development.

Following the conference, Education Week and the Washington Post published articles regarding the concern that children are not having enough time to play during the school day.

with Dr. Kessler, she suggests reading for about twenty-minutes. This, she says, will help to establish a routine that children can anticipate and look forward too. For example, many children look forward to reading a book before bed. Reading can become a soothing activity to help comfort and calm children so they can more easily fall asleep. Also, offering books to your child during activities they may not enjoy, like when eating out at a restaurant or reading to them during bath time, may serve as a great distraction!
