Exposing Young Children to Fantasy in Books

By: Kelly Christian

The Wizard of Oz ipod Many parents begin to worry that they are not giving their child enough educational material when children are entering preschool and kindergarten. Dr. Kessler points out that it’s important to know that reading is not just for learning the alphabet and vocabulary words. As children learn to differentiate between reality and fantasy, reading fairy tales gives them a chance to practice managing their emotions when feeling scared. By reading books with some scary elements, children learn to tell themselves “it’s just a story” and “I know it all turns out okay in the end.” This allows children to “master their anxiety,” meaning they learn that they can handle distressing emotions on their own. Fairy tales also allow children to think about things from multiple perspectives, fantasize, and learn to be more adaptive when feeling distressed.
