Turn OFF the Music

By: Lisa Huisman Koops
.!.

Playing recorded music as part of your daily routine is a great way to introduce your child to a variety of musical genres as well as to help your child learn to use music in her life.  A children’s music CD can turn a traffic jam into a sing-a-long and a lullaby CD helps everyone relax at bedtime.  However, be sure your child has a chance to use and hear her own voice, too, by having times in the home or car when music or television is not playing and you are quiet, too!  It is during these “quiet” moments that your child’s brain has a chance to process auditory stimulation and respond with her own vocalizations.  Don’t be surprised to hear your child humming a known tune or making up a new song, words and all, while he colors at the table, plays in the bathtub, or while he’s supposed to be napping.  Go ahead and make a recording of your little one’s serenades - a delight to your child now and a precious keepsake for years to come.

Pretend Play with Great Grandma

By: Lisa Huisman Koops

Family visits to a loved one in an assisted living facility or nursing home are important to young and old alike, but can be challenging with toddlers who pull pictures off end tables, swing from the handles of walkers, and shout joyfully throughout the visit.  It may be hard for an elderly relative to know how to interact with an active toddler and vice versa.  One possibility is to bring a few toys along and engage in inter-generational pretend play.  For instance, bring along a toy kitchen set (pot, spoon, food items) and encourage great-grandparents and toddlers to make “soup” together, taking turns thinking of ingredients and putting them in the pot, or “baking” them on the radiator!  Play peek-a-boo with a stuffed animal behind Great-Grandma’s wheel-chair.  Invite Great-Grandpa to read a simple, familiar book, leaving out some words for your child to fill in.  Encourage your toddler to ride along, waving like a queen, on Great-Grandma’s lap as she is pushed down to the dining hall for lunch.  Weaving play into family visits brings a smile to everyone’s face and creates priceless memories. Play Research and Public Education

By: The Schubert Center
.!.
.!.

Play has been shown to have considerable impact on children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development and is an important area of research for child development researchers, psychologists and educators alike. Professionals and scholars in the child developmental field are interested in learning about play and understanding how it impacts children’s development. For example, research has shown that children’s adaptive functioning including aspects of emotion regulation, coping strategies, and problem solving abilities have been strongly associated with their play.

This interest in play goes beyond the professionals working in the field and has become a topic of interest to in popular media and among the general public and parents as well. The increase in knowledge and interest in play begs for opportunities for to promote dialogue among researchers, child professionals, and care takers to facilitate putting research findings into practice.

One excellent example of bringing the scholarly community together with practitioners and working to promote the importance of play among all those interested is being done by The Play Center at Hattie Larlham

Half Past Dead 2 rip Drop Dead Gorgeous video My 4-year-old Hannah’s favourite past-time these days is playing pretend. Her imagination is really exploding, and she loves to exercise it through role-playing. Sometimes we pretend to be cats, or mermaids, or babies. Sometimes we pretend to be at school or on a farm. Sometimes we even pretend that I am the mom and she is my child and I am feeding her lunch. It’s a stretch, I know, but we manage. And then we pretend that we speak Spanish and babble at each other incoherently… I have no background in child development, but here are some of the things that I’ve observed as a mom watching my preschooler play pretend…
