Musical Babble

By: Lisa Huisman Koops

Think about how your child learns language – by hearing you speak every day, by trying out sounds, and having you respond with delight to their coos and babbling.  Ideally, children learn music in much the same way they learn language: through immersion in a rich environment with opportunities to develop listening, singing, and moving vocabularies.  You’ll notice your child’s early vocalizations are song-like and their movements contain many rhythmic elements.  Music educators recognize the importance of encouraging children’s “musical babble” in much the same way we encourage their language babble: an opportunity to play with sounds (pitches and rhythms) as they experience them.

Children gradually move from absorbing sounds, to playing with sounds through babble, and eventually to imitating musical patterns and phrases. You can encourage your child’s musical development by

“My tummy hurts” and “I don’t feel good” could be signs that your child is about to be hit with a cold or flu, but, it is also possible that your child is experiencing anxiety. Many times kids are anxious about things in their life, such as reading in front of the class, starting a new sport, or going to a new school. Often times, kids don’t show this with words, but instead through stomach aches, nightmares, and headaches. If your child is having a lot of physical symptoms talk to him about whether he might be scared about something.

But, if your child seems to have a lot of aches and pains or is having a hard time sleeping, it is important that you have your child looked at by a medical professional to determine if there is anything physically wrong .

An Authentic Apology

By: Joan Morgenstern
.!.

Children have the innate ability to push their parents’ buttons. This button-pushing can trigger a response a parent might later regret. The apology which is likely to follow may be well intended but all too often contains the word “but.”

For example:

    Firehouse Dog trailer

  • I apologize for raising my voice, BUT I asked you several times to stop hitting your brother.
  • I apologize for calling you a baby, BUT I told you to stop crying and use your big-girl voice.
  • I apologize for yelling, BUT you know how much your whining irritates me.

The word “but” inserted in an apology not only diminishes the impact of the apology, it offers an inappropriate justification for our behavior.

Let’s consider the same apologies without the word “BUT.”

  • I apologize for raising my voice, and I’m going to work on maintaining better control the next time I feel angry.
  • I apologize for calling you a baby, and I’m going to refrain from name calling when I feel angry and frustrated.
  • I apologize for yelling at you, and I’m going to use a calmer voice even when I feel upset.

When we apologize with no strings attached, our children will feel our heartfelt sentiments. From our example, they will understand the importance of taking responsibility for one’s behavior.”

Preparing Children for Success

By: Joan Morgenstern

Harsh Times hd

One of the most challenging tasks of parenting is preparing our children for success. Our ever-changing, technologically sophisticated society further complicates this issue. Some parents expose their children to a variety of early learning and enrichment opportunities, hoping to provide an edge in a competitive marketplace. While these programs have merit, we must also teach our children self-reliance, compassion and ethics.

Conventional schooling helps children increase their knowledge base and acquire valuable skills. However, this alone is not enough. In this time of economic uncertainty, the most enduring gift we can give our children are tools that will help them develop strong character. Parents must focus less on what their children will become and more on who they will become. To prepare our children for success both now and in the future we must encourage them in the following ways:

  • Help them maintain high standards of personal conduct
  • Support relationships where they treat others with dignity and respect
  • Foster their pursuit of lifelong learning
  • Provide them with opportunities to delay gratification
  • Help them develop empathy so they are better able to understand others feelings
  • Become attentive listeners so they can focus on what others are saying
  • Handle adversity
  • Choose a positive attitude

Additionally, when we spend time with our children they feel valuable and worthy. Our unconditional love for our children is the foundation upon which their characters are built. As parents, we must do more then make our children feel good, we must help our children become competent, resourceful and good people. This will prepare them for both the challenges and opportunities ahead.

A Newborn’s Built-in Feelings

Anne of the Thousand Days full There’s a new PsychologyToday.com blog by Dr. Paul Holinger, author of What Babies Say Before They Can Talk The Four Feathers

. The first post focuses on babies and their feelings:

Guys and Dolls release

Shoot on Sight buy Current research shows that your baby is born with about 8 to 10 built-in feelings, as shown by the facial expressions. Although there are some interesting controversies in this area, the best information available now suggests humans are born with 9 feelings:

  • Interest (curiosity)
  • Enjoyment
  • Surprise
  • Distress
  • Anger
  • Fear
  • Shame
  • Disgust (a reaction to noxious tastes)
  • Dissmell (a reaction to noxious odors)

Believe it or not, these are your baby’s earliest feelings! Most of them are apparent within the first few days of your baby’s life. Over time, they will combine with experience and with each other to form our more complex emotional life…

Looks like it’ll be a very informative blog!

    Dance, Baby!

    By: Lisa Huisman Koops

Young children love to dance! Putting on some fun music and moving & grooving together is a great way to encourage physical activity, expose your child to a variety of musical styles, foster development of gross- and fine motor movement skills, and enrich relationships!

    Bringing Out the Dead dvd

    Vampire in Brooklyn ipod

Here are a few ideas for “mixing up” a dance party:

  • Play a “Move & Freeze” game: When the music is playing, dance; when the music pauses (a remote control is helpful here), freeze. This helps teach body control and response to sound.
  • Let the elbow lead: …or the knee, or the head - choose a body part to lead the dance movements; this helps teach body part names, body awareness, and coordination.
  • Paint the floor: “Continuous fluid movement” is a basic movement that is foundational to dance as well as music performance. Encouraging your child to move with “flow”, by painting the floor (wall, ceiling, your legs, etc) and moving with smooth, circular motions will help her learn to feel the space between the beats of music and move without tension.
  • Move those hips: The hips are central to the body, and being able to move the hips with continuous fluid movement (as described above) is key. You may feel self-conscious, but your child won’t!
  • Wild Hogs movies Helping your child move comfortably and confidently to music will be fun as well as support multiple areas of development! For more great ideas check out Music Play: The Early Childhood Music Curriculum Guide for Parents Teachers & Caregivers
