Reading and Cognitive Development

By: Kelly Christian

Giving your child opportunities to develop an appreciation for reading and music at a young age is essential for their cognitive development. Dr. Kessler sat down with us for an interview earlier this year and offered advice for parents on reading with their child. Dr. Koops lent her expertise in child development and music in a post about ways to nurture musicality in your child.  Dr. Tobin worked in the cognitive science field and highlighted some of the ways infants begin to develop an attention span. Check out these posts to learn more about how early experiences with reading and music promote cognitive development in children.

Elizabeth Short and Sandra Russ describe how play helps children learn and helps shape their thinking and behavior. And a post by graduate student Kelly Christian also describes how even silly playground games can give children opportunities to practice ways to control their behavior.

Jenny Marder recently published an interesting article, “What’s fun for a wasp” The Boondock Saints buy

in the Monitor on Psychology magazine- a look at play research from the perspective of animal behaviorists.

Similar to research focused on play and the development of children, animal behaviorists first had to define what is play and what it looks like in animals.

According to University of Tennessee psychology professor and animal-play expert Gordon Burghardt, PhD, animal play is:

Road to Bali release

  • Pointless—for example, behavior that looks like hunting but does not result in killing prey, such as a cat pouncing on a rubber mouse or play fighting
  • It must be pleasurable, spontaneous, voluntary or fun
  • It must be repeated
  • Initiated when an animal is in a relaxed, low-stress state
  • Different in either structure or time from serious behavior

Burghardt also proposed “Play may be the reason we evolved so quickly, that we have big brains and intelligence. Play may have been an important aspect in the rapid evolution of human mentality.”

The Man from Snowy River This article is both informative and a fun read! Have some fun of your own exploring animal behavior with your children outside or the zoo! Ask your children to try to spot animals at play and if they see similarities in how they like to play! This could be a fun way to both educate the importance of play to your kids and try something new while at the park or visiting a zoo!

Olivia becomes a different person in the great outdoors. She springs to life and is joyful in ways that transcend the barriers of enclosed spaces… I think it’s vital that we give our children the same experience we had in our youth of the outdoors and nature. While the days of innocence — where we could let our kids roam free, unchaperoned in the neighborhood for hours on end may be gone, sadly, that doesn’t mean we need to clip their wings to a childhood of remaining inside playing video games.

Grandparents.com has a wonderful guide: Go Play Outside featuring 97 ideas for outdoor fun. Go download this guide for simple, sweet ways to experience nature and the great wide open with your kids.

More then a walk in the park for kids with ADHA

We recently wrote about Stephen Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory and the cognitive benefits of spending time outside for both children and adults. Drs. Andrea Faber-Taylor and Frances Kuo from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, have applied this theory to children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and have published compelling results.

Drs. Faber-Taylor and Kuo investigated the impact of different environments on attention abilities in children with ADHD. The results of their study revealed that children with ADHD were able to concentrate better following time outside. Furthermore, “greener” environments yielded stronger results.

They found that a 20-minute walk in a park was more beneficial than a 20-minute walk downtown or in a neighborhood setting. They conclude that “doses of nature might serve as a safe, inexpensive, widely accessible new tool in the tool kit for managing ADHD symptoms.”

The findings presented by Drs. Faber-Taylor and Kuo are a novel extension of previous research with adults and children in the general population who were found to have some cognitive benefits after spending time outdoors in natural and “green” environments.

See our post “A Breath of Fresh Air” for more info!

What does it mean for you?

This research suggests that both adults and children with and without attention deficits can benefit from taking a little time to play outside and take advantage of natural settings!

Follow the link to read an in depth interview with Drs. Faber-Taylor and Kuo about this work.

You can also request from your local research library the complete article or purchase a copy online: Faber-Taylor, AF & Kuo, FE. (March 2009). Children with Attention Deficits Concentrate Better After a Walk in the Park. Dirty Dancing trailer

Journal of Attention Disorders, 12, 402-409.

***It is important to note that children who are suspected of having attention problems should be evaluated by a proper professional, like a psychiatrist or licensed psychologist who can make an appropriate diagnosis and recommendations for treatment.

Make Memories this summer

Amy posts tips on making fun outdoor living a priority. In summary she says:

Rush psp

Remember they are only young once. Each summer, I marvel at how much my children have grown and how quickly our time together seems to be passing. I am trying to savor these moments and for me, that means slowing down our summers. While we make big plans for summer activities, I can admit that I become selfish with my time with them in the summer. The school year will begin again and we will be back to the crazy grind of school days.

Escape from L.A.

Savor these moments and revise your schedule so you can enjoy each moment of them. Seek a little shade with them. Create with them. Hop in the kiddie pool with them. Indulge in homemade slushies and popcorn every single day and blame it on “the kids” and “hydration.” Be selfish with them and their time. Treasure them.

As my husband and I say after it takes two hours to put away all the outdoor toys and clean up after the dinner, “We are making memories.”
