Three Great Ways to Spur Creative Play

By: Creative Play Muse

With kids back in school, it’s easy for families to fall into the familiar grind of a daily routine.  Trying to remember to take time for creative play can be difficult, which means it often falls by the wayside, as other seemingly more “important” things rise to the top, such as extracurricular activities or homework.  However, putting aside time to be sure your kids engage in creative play is every bit as important as what they need to do for school.  Creative play develops problem-solving and leadership skills as well as behavioral control, among other valuable abilities.

Transmorphers move When everyone’s schedule seems packed, remembering that creative play shouldn’t be work can also be difficult. Simply making sure your kids’ schedules allow for some time to play is really all you need to do as a parent.  But just in case you’re finding yourself at a loss as to how to get your kids away from video games and the television, here are three great ways to get them playing in no time!

1.    Dress Up:  Some things never change, and the fact that kids love to play dress up is no exception.  Rather than giving away all of your old clothes, start a dress-up box Starsky & Hutch movies

!  You’ll be amazed at what your kids come up with when they don old dresses or suits.

2.    Prop Box:  Creative play shouldn’t be ruled by specific props, such as store-bought things (i.e. a pirate’s sword, or a princess crown).  However, this doesn’t mean props can’t be made or imagined!  Whenever you think of throwing something out, think of how your child might see it.  An old blanket can easily become a cape; an old scarf, a bandage.

3.    Art supplies:  Having kids get creative doesn’t have to be expensive. Simple paper and crayons can get your children actively participating in creative play in minutes.  Add glitter, glue, safety scissors, construction paper – the possibilities are as endless as your child’s imagination.

How do you spur creative play in your children?

Do schools kill creativity?

By: Kelly Christian

Sir Ken Robinson, PhD is a creativity expert and author of The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, a deep look at human creativity and education.

In one of the most popular TedTalks distributed, Do schools kill creativity?, Sir Robinson makes a compelling argument that our current educational system undermines children’s creativity.

“…kids will take a chance. If they don’t know, they’ll have a go. Am I  right? They’re not frightened of being wrong. Now, I don’t mean to say that being wrong is the same thing as being creative. What we do know is, if you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original. And by the time they get to be adults, most kids have lost that capacity. They have become frightened of being wrong.

…And the result is, we are educating people out of their creative capacities.”

Robinson also raises many questions about what will happen if educational systems do not support or acknowledge multiple types of intelligence, like dance, music, and drama, and instead ignore or stigmatize individuals who have intellectual strengths in the creative arts.

It’s almost Halloween, and for most kids and families, that means it’s time to pick out a creative Halloween costume!  So how can you incorporate creative play into your child’s Halloween costume?  Well, it’s easier than you may think.

Research has shown creative dramatic play is an excellent way to help kids open up and express themselves.  And what better opportunity is there for them to do this than during Halloween?  Odds are your child will select a Halloween costume which reflects something specific about his personality or desires, which can give you an amazing window into his personality. Luckily, there are a variety of ways to integrate creative play into Halloween costume selection and creation in a way that’s fun for everyone. For instance, make a creative Halloween costume out of household items with your child’s help, or act out scenes while dressed up and “in character.”

These types of activities provide fun for both you and your child, while giving you an “inside look” at how they thinks. However, be careful not to go overboard on your child’s Halloween costume.  Experts agree that the fewer props given to kids, the better.  Too many ready-made props (or in this case, a too-elaborate Halloween costume!) only limit children’s imaginations and creative potential.  For instance, if your child is dressing up in a dragon slayer Halloween costume, it’s always better to give them a stick to play with, rather than a plastic sword – you’ll be amazed at how creative your child can be when left to their own unique creative impulses!

It’s probably hard to believe, given that we’re living in a very high-tech, fast-moving, and expensive world, but when it comes to engaging your child in creative playtime some of the best things in life really are free.  By just looking around your house at what you have on hand, odds are you already have a veritable toy chest of playtime fun just waiting to be discovered – no batteries, computer, or outlet required!

  • Cardboard Boxes: Every child’s favorite free toy, it seems.  With a little time and some markers, these can be made into anything from a car to a newly discovered planet.
  • Plastic Bags: A great way for children to learn about the basics of money handling is by letting them “shop” around the house, putting items into their bags, giving them a value, and then “checking out” at the end of their shopping experience.
  • Paper Bag Puppets:  Most of us have lunch bags lying around the house, so why not use them to create easy paper bag hand puppets to put on a show after dinner?
  • Blankets & Chairs:  Make Saturday mornings a little more fun by letting kids set up blankets and chairs into their own little “den” and serve breakfast inside.
  • Coffee mugs, glasses, and plates:  Let kids set up a “restaurant” with whatever you have in your cupboard, and see where it goes.  Some kids will even want to come up with their own menus to order from, even if it’s just PB&J and grilled cheese!
  • Obstacle Course:  This works especially well in a big basement on a rainy day.  Make big cushions into hurdles, throw pillows into stepping stones, and the ever-popular cardboard box into a tunnel.
