Research has shown creative dramatic play is an excellent way to help kids open up and express themselves. And what better opportunity is there for them to do this than during Halloween? Odds are your child will select a Halloween costume which reflects something specific about his personality or desires, which can give you an amazing window into his personality. Luckily, there are a variety of ways to integrate creative play into Halloween costume selection and creation in a way that’s fun for everyone. For instance, make a creative Halloween costume out of household items with your child’s help, or act out scenes while dressed up and “in character.”
These types of activities provide fun for both you and your child, while giving you an “inside look” at how they thinks. However, be careful not to go overboard on your child’s Halloween costume. Experts agree that the fewer props given to kids, the better. Too many ready-made props (or in this case, a too-elaborate Halloween costume!) only limit children’s imaginations and creative potential. For instance, if your child is dressing up in a dragon slayer Halloween costume, it’s always better to give them a stick to play with, rather than a plastic sword – you’ll be amazed at how creative your child can be when left to their own unique creative impulses!
